Today we received a package from Kaliningrad. Olegti sent us a bunch of small books of the cat. The cat was also strolling around in the last (ku)š! issues and received rave reviews.
We offer the books for sale. The book is a bit bigger than š! and features two dozen stories of the cat. Starting from 22.11. you may buy it at Satori bookshop for 3.75 Lats or already now you can order it from us. Including postage it will cost 4.50 Lats, or if you are from abroad you can get it for 5.40 Euro + 1.80 Euro postage. The book is in Russian, but there is an English translation attached. It is not only a great christmas present for your friends, but also for yourself!

Wow, take a look at what Hironori Kikuchi made. He liked our last match project so much that he drew different versions of it. All by hand as we were told. Simply amazing, aren't they? The missing one is on tour now, soon to be seen in Lisbon and Linz, where the exhibition is travelling to. Thanks to the support of the Latvian State Culture Foundation (VKKF) the exhibition will be a little bit extended at every stop and the same foundation also supported our new issue of (ku)š! which will feature among others also a comics by Hironori. Arigato!
On November 2nd at Lāčplēša ielā 31 opens '¼ Satori: grāmatnīca, lasītava, tikšanās vieta'. It is a very nice place with a great selection of books. Next to a wide range of philosophic books and Latvian literature it also offers a good selection of children books, English books, used books and 3 shelfes of comics! You can of course find all issues of kuš! š! and KU but also some foreign comics like Stripburger, some German comics and others.
Next to popular mainstream Mangas there is also a healthy scene of more alternative comics in Japan. One of the most beautiful magazines, UZO, which has been published by Rokudai Tanaka since 2005, features 5 Latvian artists in it's newest issue # 11.
The artists which are in Latvia regularely published in kuš! surprise the Japanese public with their different approach to the media. Ingrida Picukane contributed her previousely in the Slovene magazine Stripburger published story about the sad potatoe who is looking for his love tool. Anete Melece also has a rather typical depressing Latvian Story on display which she also published in Stripburger before. The story is about an elderly man who bakes cookies from his tears and is more than actual in this times of crisis. Oskar Pavlovskis who is known for his creepy monster stories is in there with a story which was previously featured in the rave Finnish Kutikuti. Martins Zutis contributed even two stories. One about the previosly in kuš! seen rat who always gets cheated when playing cards and a new story about dying kittens. Kaspar Grosevs made something special for the Japanese issue about a music duo on it's first Tokyo concert. In the end of the issue is also a short text about the short history of Latvian comics written by David Schilter and Zane Zajanckauska supposed to introduce the Japanese readers into the new Latvian scene.
It is a seldom ossasion that in Japan are published stories from foreign artist. Probably because they have themselves already a lot of great artists who make comics for a living. However in this light it is even a bigger joy to have so many Latvians featured in one magazine.
Rokudai Tanaka told that the Latvian comics are very different from the Japanese Manga style and it is very interesting for Japanese people to see them. The same for us, we really like to see comics from Japanese artists. In the last issue we published stories from Rokudai Tanaka and Keisei Kanamachi and in our newest issue due to be out in the beginning of december there will be an exclusive story of the underground comics star Hironori Kikuchi.

Aiste MO who was featured in š! #3 organized an exhibition of graphic art from Lithuanian and international artists and says there will be also some object art, paintings, costumes, ceramic sculpture.

Sounds lika a good reason to finally go and visit the European capital of Culture 2009!
The exhibition "the last match" successfully opened on Saturday the 12th September with lots of happy visitors and continues to be open every day until Saturday the 19th on Lacplesu iela 37 in Riga, as part of the Survival Kit project, which uses empty stores throughout the centre of the city to showcase contemporary Latvian and International Art.
Artists were asked to draw a piece in the size of a matchbox about "the last match". At the moment 151 artworks from 38 countries are on display, among them from South Africa, India, Japan, Australia, North and South America and throughout all Europe. And the exhibition will grow further, as we plan to show it on new places, we will each time try to add one row of artists.

On August 24th kuš! had the great opportunity to meet up with Miriam Katin and her husband in Riga. We spent a lovely evening with Russian food and Czech beer (the Latvian beer was out) and a lot of interesting discussions.
Miriam Katin is most famous for her comics about her memories of the Russian occupation in the 1950s and is also an acclaimed illustrator of children's books. To get to know more about her we recommend to read this interview or to get her book: We Are On Our Own (D&Q), Allein unter Allen (Carlsen) or Seules contre tous (Seuil).
Yoshi is starting her own zine. Send her also your work for consideration!
Izstāžu zālē „Rīgas mākslas telpa" no 29. augusta līdz 6. septembrim būs apskatāma ielu mākslas izstāde „BENEATH", ko veidos trīs Latvijas graffiti mākslinieki - KIWIE, AMC un SAKI. Izstādes atklāšana notiks 28. augustā plkst. 19.00.
Izstādes nosaukums „BENEATH" (no angļu val. - "zem") ataino izstādes darbu eksponēšanas veidu un konceptu. Izstāde būs unikāla gan ar noformējumu, gan izpildījumu. Latvijā, iespējams, pirmo reizi māksla tiks radīta turpat uz vietas izstādes telpās, kas izceļ mākslinieku profesionalitāti, ātrumu un precizitāti. Mākslas darbi netiks eksponēti tikai uz audekliem, parādot ielu mākslas īsto dabu - „ārpus jebkādiem rāmjiem". Mākslas tapšanas process tiks filmēts, lai izstādes laikā jebkurš apmeklētājs video materiālu varētu noskatīties.
"Tas ar ko mūs redz ikdienā, un tas, kas slēpjas zem tā visa, naktis un zīmēšana uz sienām - tās ir divas pasaules. Ar izstādi vēlamies parādīt mūsu dzīves veidu - cik divdaļīga tā ir. Tie [graffiti] nav tikai ķēpājumi, bet gan jaunā gadsimta māksla," par projektu „BENEATH" stāsta mākslinieki.
Šodien graffiti izpausmes saista arvien lielāku mākslas teorētiķu, psihologu un sociologu interesi un kopš tā aizsākumiem 20. gadsimta 60. gados ASV līdz pat mūsdienām šis mākslas veids raisa diskusijas. Žans Mišels Baskiats (Jean-Michel Basquiat) (1960 - 1988) kļuva populārs kā Ņujorkas grafitti mākslinieks, vēlāk kļūstot par 80. gadu neo-ekspresionistu. Baskiata gleznas turpina ietekmēt mūsdienu māksiniekus.
„Graffiti kustības pamatā ir protests pret varas definēto sabiedriskās telpas iekārtojumu, kas, kaut šķietami kopējs visai sabiedrībai, tomēr tiek veidots atbilstoši valdošajām politiskajām un ekanomiskajām interesēm."* Svarīgi būtu ne nosodīt un pieklusināt graffiti, ne arī to slavēt, bet veidot diskusiju sabiedrībā, kas arī ir šīs izstādes mērķis.

Par māksliniekiem: "KIWIE" - pazīstams ne tikai Latvijas robežās, bet arī ārpus tām. Viens no pirmajiem Latvijā, kas sāka zīmēt tēlus uz sienām [character] . Lielu atpazīstamību starp zīmētājiem visā pasaulē ir ieguvis viņa radīts tēls - character "KIWIE". "SAKI" - Latvijā viens no aktīvākajiem zīmētājiem. Ar sevis radītu stilu, kas ir atpazīstams tā vieglumā un svaigumā. "AMC" - Jaunais talants grafikā un dizainā, kas savas prasmes veiksmīgi piekopj un attīsta arī uz sienām.

Biedrība „Jaunatne pret AIDS" un „Humana Latvija" aicina jauniešus pieteikties dalībai projektā „Komiksi bez robežām". Projekta ietvaros iemācīsieties ne tikai labāk zīmēt komiksus, bet arī noskaidrosiet, kā caur komiksiem runāt par sociālām problēmām, īpaši HIV/AIDS, un kā to visu arī iemācīt citiem. Viss sāksies ar apmācībām no 4. līdz 6. septembrim viesu namā Pie Saulītes, Valmieras rajonā. Tas vadīs treneris no Somijas, kas šādas pašas apmācības ir vadījis arī Āfrikā. Apmācības notiks angļu valodā. Vēl vienu reizi tiksimies 19. septembrī, Rīgā, lai uzzinātu vairāk par HIV/AIDS.
Ar šīm apmācībām viss nebeigsies. Pēc tam jums pašiem būs jāvada komiksu zīmēšanas nodarbības citiem jauniešiem, lai izplatītu tālāk apmācībās iegūtās zināšanas.
Apmācības ir bezmaksas. Tiek segti ceļa izdevumi uz pasākuma norises vietu.

Komiksu kultūras žurnāls kuš! 2009. gada 30. jūlijā atklās izstādi „Pazudis pilsētā ", kurā skatāmi Anetes Meleces, Kaspara Groševa, Ingrīdas Pičukānes, Maijas Kurševas un Oskara Pavlovska darbi par pazudušām lietām, pazušanu pilsētā un padomiem kā nepazust. Izstāde skatāma līdz 12.augustam.
Izstādes kurators, komiksu kultūras žurnāla kuš! redaktors Dāvids Šilters izstādi sākotnēji iecerējis kā telpisku kuš! numuru, tāpēc dalībai izstādē tika uzaicināti mākslinieki, kas jau agrāk žurnālā veiksmīgi eksperimentējuši ar komiksu kā vizuālu vēstījumu: Anete Melece, Kaspars Groševs, Ingrīda Pičukāne, Maija Kurševa un Oskars Pavlovskis. Tomēr izstādes tapšanas gaitā mākslinieki paši izvēlējās sev saistošāko mediju, tāpēc izstādē būs redzams gan komikss, gan audiovizuāla instalācija, gan gleznas un ilustrācijas.
Visi izstādes mākslinieki ir Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas Vizuālās komunikācijas nodaļas bijušie studenti, trīs no viņiem šobrīd dzīvo un strādā ārpus Latvijas: Anete Melece - Cīrihē, Maija Kurševa - Berlīnē, Ingrīda Pičukāne - Tallinā, tādējādi gūstot jaunu pieredzi par pazušanu pilsētā. Vienlaikus ar izstādi tiks atvērts arī jaunais (ku)š!, kuru bez maksas varēs atrast izstādes atklāšanā. Tajā tāpat kā izstādē latviešu un ārzemju mākslinieki komiksos stāstīs par pazušanu un pazudušajiem pilsētā.
Rīgā izstāde, kas atgriezīsies no izrādīšanas Berlīnē, tiks paplašināta ar jauniem oriģinālkomiksiem, kuri publicēti arī jaunajā (ku)š! - Paula Pecles (Paul Paetzel) no Vācijas, Karaļa.Lū.K (König Lü.Q) no Šveices un Leo Kvivro (Leo Quievreux) no Francijas darbiem. Papildus izstādei tiks atvērts arī lasāmstūris, kurā kavēties un pazust avangarda komiksu pasaulē no Vācijas. Tos uz izstādes laiku komiksumīļiem piedāvā Gētes institūts.

Krišs Salmanis who was featured in our last issue of (ku)š! has a solo exibition in Riga Art Space. The exhibition is open from April 25th until May 22nd.
‘Lost' is like an ironic and intellectual game with the viewer. Salmanis works often are humorous commentaries about the world around us. ‘Lost' will take you into the realm of the usual but will make you look at it differently. It might turn out that the simple scene of Latvian countryside is hiding something much more. Take your time to notice the unusual!
The exhibition "Verloren in der Stadt" (Lost in the city) was successfully openend on Friday the 24th of April in the Latvian Centre Berlin with a joyful performance of Barenzunge. The exhibition can still be seen until the 19th of June every WED - FRI from 11 AM until 18 PM on the Solmstrasse 20.
In autumn the exhibition might travel to Riga. But before that there will be a special (ku)sh!-issue with the same theme. Comics in A6 format with 1-8 pages can be sent to us until the 1st of June.

The International Comics Festival Boomfest which will take place in St.Petersburg from the 24.-27. September just announced the theme of it's annual competition: PORTRAIT. Comic artists of all ages are asked to send in their comics on this (auto)biographical theme until the first of August. There are two categories for people above and below the age of 15. The nominated works will be exhibited and tour around Russia. But this is not the only reason it is really worth to take part in this excellent Competition! Šajā konkursā jaunieši vecumā no 12 - 16 gadiem tiek aicināti iesniegt komiksus par tēmu „Pirmais randiņš Latvijā un citviet pasaulē". Savukārt, jaunieši vecumā no 16 - 19 gadiem tiek aicināti iesniegt simboliku, kas raksturo Attīstības sadarbību. Labāko darbu autori tiks apbalvoti.

Mūsu albuma dizaineris Jānis Birznieks ieminējās, ka mūsu albuma vāku varētu rotāt pērtiķīši. Man šī doma ļoti iepatikās un man ienāca prātā Nate Van Dyke darbi, jo viņš bieži izmanto mankijus, turklāt esmu viņa komiksu fans.Mums īpaši piesaistīja viņa darbs "Chimp Kiss", kas pašreiz rotā mūsu albuma vāciņu...
Tā nu es sadūšojos un sakontaktējos ar Nate, viņš savukārt paklausījās mūsu mūziku, kas viņam patika, un viņš atļāva izmantot trīs viņa darbus, kas pašreiz rotā mūsu albumu.

- Verners (20): Ir interesanti lasīt vienkāršus stāstus „iz dzīves” it īpaši, ja tos papildina paša stāstītāja zīmējumi, kā kuš!.
- Jānis (26): Man patīk no bērna kājas mazas, jocīgas lietas – sērkoki, komiksi, mūzika. Komiksi – tā ir tāda maza minipasaule, kurā var atrast arī sevi. Reizēm.
- Liene (21): Man patīk komikss kuš!, jo tajā ir smieklīgas, kodolīgas un aizraujošas animācijas, kas pat cilvēkam bez humora izjūtas izraisīs smieklu ēkmi!
- Andzhan (21): Man patīk kuš!, jo, manuprāt, tas ir visinteresantākais žurnāls Latvijā, kuru es labprāt lasītu katru reizi, katru dienu. Jo tie joki, kas ir ekšā, patiešām uzlabo garastāvokli. Ir par ko pasmieties. Nav garlaicīgs!!!
- Kristīne (22): Tāpēc, ka Kušmens mani vienkārši apbūra (kā, lai tādā vīrietī neiemīlas???)! Tāpēc, ka šķirstot, lasot un baudot komiksus, es varu nesarunāties un ignorēt apkārtējos, jo esmu aizņemta! Tāpēc, ka pati neprotu zīmēt, bet ļoti tīk šāda veida izpausmes!
- Dimons (21): Šajos komiksos var ieraudzīt dažādas situācijas no dzīves, vienalga, drūmas vai jautras, tāpat varēs pasmieties.
